Somerset Orchard Project 2004-5
with artist Kate Lynch and poet James Crowden

Pupils from five primary schools on the Somerset Levels followed the seasonal life of an orchard through the year, filling sketchbooks with words and pictures. In May, at blossom time they met beekeepers and explored the mysteries of pollination. In autumn they drew ripe apples on the trees and paddled in apple juice in cider pressing sheds. After Christmas there was a traditional Wassail and tree pruning in the frosty orchards. Their artwork and poetry celebrates Somerset’s apple and cider heritage. Kate worked with pupils on making sketching notes using pencil and charcoal and with pastels and acrylics back at school. Their three triptych panels are a permanent mobile display which will be taken to public events by the Somerset Levels and Moors Partnership.

Taunton Market Project 2005

An art and heritage project with primary schools to document the livestock market
In Taunton. Kate worked as artist-in-residence on the project with pupils from six schools, taking them sketching to the fatstock auctions. Back at school the pupils developed their sketches as expressive charcoal drawings, fineliner designs and collaborative acrylic paintings which were exhibited at the Brewhouse Theatre in June. Postcards of two of the paintings are available. E-mail if interested.
