PNG and the UK have strong trade links, with the balance of trade being in PNG's favour. Among EU countries, the amount of PNG's exports to the UK is second only to its exports to Germany, and PNG's imports from the UK are the highest of any EU country. Spices and commodities such as cocoa, coffee, tea, copra, palm oil, prawns, crocodile skins, sawn timber and gold are some of PNG's exports to the UK. Imports from the UK include machinery and mechanical appliances and parts as well as measuring instruments and chemical products. Traditionally, direct investment from the UK has been largely concentrated in the PNG agriculture sector. Recently, however, there has been increased investment in the mining and hydrocarbon industries. Please contact the High Commissioner, PNG High Commission in London info@png.org.uk, with any trade enquiries. The PNG Government's Investment Promotion Authority (IPA) have a useful web site at www.ipa.gov.pg This site gives an overview of government policy, the taxation system as well as entry permits for business purposes. Papua New Guinea Business Directory's site www.pngbd.com has excellent up-to-date information on business and the PNG economy. |
