HISTORY

    Lydd Town Museum was opened in July 1978 by Councillor Denis Prior, Mayor of  Lydd at that time, following the return of the Merryweather Fire Engine from Kent Fire Brigade, and it's restoration..

    Members of the Friends of Lydd donated items, to be exhibited, from their own homes. Since that date more articles have been received and an excellent collection of artefacts has resulted, all having been used in Lydd in years gone by.

    Main displays are changed annually so if you have already visited our Museum there is still a lot more to see each year.

    In addition to these exhibits we have a cabinet in Lydd Library which is changed regularly to encourage people to visit our Museum.

     The Museum is run entirely by volunteers and is under the custody and control of the Friends who meet regularly each month on the third Wednesday evening at 7:30pm in the Hardy Hall (with the exception of July and August when the Museum is open) when they are addressed by various  speakers.  Visitors are warmly welcome to attend these meetings and a donation of £1 is requested.  Annual membership is £3 per person per year and new members are always welcome.

     We are members of the Civic Trust, Open Space Society, Kent Museums Group, the Kent History Federation, and Campaign for the Protection of Rural England and affiliated to the Romney Marsh, Footpaths Preservation Society which had originally been instituted by the Friends of Lydd.
