There are many distant relations known (mainly from the Buddo/Crichton side) but I have omitted them from this history. The full history stretches to more than 25 pages. Many of them are/were from around St Andrews. See Author's note at end. However the further back the generations go the more room for error exists and anything pre 1750 becomes more educated guesses than research as there is very little information to go on unless documents such as sasines, wills etc exist. Also much movement may have been done via the sea not land. This would make the likes of Dundee, St Andrews, Crail, Leith fairly close together. Eg St Abbs head is only about 30 miles from Crail by sea. Again this makes research difficult. For example Andrew Sives (from St Andrews) married Ann Wilson in Edinburgh yet they had their children in Dundee. One of their children was know to have lived in Ceres. Andrew may well be connected to my/our Sives (they were Mariners) yet no firm connection exists at the moment.
KEY
This family tree is ordered in the generations in which they occur - the Initial Generation being the children of the first known ancestors. For example ELIZA CRICHTON is the child of the sixth generation JAMES CRICHTON b. circa.1830 who is in turn the child of the fifth generation above him DAVID CRICHTON and ELIZABETH BUDDO who are the children of the fourth generation above them - THOMAS CRICHTON/MARGARET WOODCOCK and JAMES BUDDO/MARGARET BROWN. Entries with no parents listed are not connected to the previous generations and may appear on a separate family history. If parents are not known they are stated as "Parents not known". Those highlighted in bold are the main connecting generations and connect to the author.
Abbreviations b. d. m. have been used as for birth, death, marriage. Marriages, where known, are CoS unless stated. Name in brackets or underlined is usual name of person. If a code number is recorded that is the code used in the General Registers for Scotland at New Register House - year, district, entry no. Census entries have M, W, U for married, widow(er) and unmarried.
Please note that this is a work in progress and some comments will relate to further research to be done. However if anyone has any further information (dates of birth or anything of interest) or is aware of any errors please contact the author, Neil Brown (6th Generation) at neil.brown5@virgin.net. or 5 Kirk Wynd, Crail, Fife, KY10 3TW.

Best guess for Janet is 1769 or earlier. James appears to be only child (certainly by 1808) which suggests that James snr married late. Janet may be 2nd marriage.

Some of this information (relating mainly to the early Buddos) was passed on to me by a distant relation in St Andrews - James Barclay. I have not yet checked its accuracy other than on the IGI for direct ancestors.
