As Lilian lived in a flat in Glasgow she wanted to get married from her brothers house at Leven. Andrew Smith, a cousin, was an elder of the church at Buckhaven (now demolished). EHS - b. 55 Gardner Street, Glasgow - recorded by Thomas William Stothart, Wine & Spirit Salesman (1898 Milton 560 - Official Certificate available). Baptised in the Barony church May 1st 1898.

James worked as a engineer for confectionary manufacturers and travelled to Europe for his job. Served in WWI. Was in the TA and joined the Argyle and Southern Highlanders and transferred to the Royal Engineers. He became a master sergeant. Was in Belgium at start of WW2.

Lilian (see above) thought Elizabeth was 2 years younger than she was.

Ella Stothart, second generation, recalls John McMurdo visiting his sister
Janet for his holidays each year. He walked 86 miles from Penpont to the University (Glasgow) and arrived at 6pm on the dot. He then ate 6 herrings. John also walked 12 miles a day to his work.

Closeburn Churchyard records William Osburn, son of James McMURDO, who died at Park 4th July 1868 aged 4 years and 8 months; Robert Osburn McMURDO their son, who died at Linn Cottage, Tynron, 3rd June 1906 aged 39 years & Elizabeth Osburn McMURDO, their daughter, and beloved wife of William Pickering DUNN, who died in South Africa 20th January 1910 aged 37 years.

Mathew his brother appears to have married about 1880 with wife from Ayrshire - 1 child by 1881. Perhaps David and Mathew went to Glasgow together).

Looking through census records it does not appear unusual for illegitimate births to take place in Dumfrieshire. Perhaps just as common as the 21
st Century. Eg for 1861 Census for Closeburn 4 out of ten family households (9 Mcmurdo and 1 Anderson household) have unmarried mothers in them. Children generally took their fathers surname in Dumfrieshire.

Thomas christened 11/5/1807 d. (58) Wauchope River, above the Manse, Langholm. Drowned. Body found in River Esk. No medical attendant - Recorded by William Barton, Mason's apprentice, Learning? Head, Canonbie. Janet recorded as alive. Registered 22/12/1865 (nearly a month after death - perhaps it took that long to find the body!) (1865 839 59). Note - a Mary Stothart married John Barton in 1807 lochmaben. So William a cousin?

Separate families at least from above 2 x James; 1x Robert; 1 x Thomas = 32 people. Robert I believe is at Middliebie in 51 - His son David at middliebie (41) in 1881.

No simon or david in 51 census. 75 stotharts and 56 stoddarts in 51 census. Stotharts look like they probably all originate from 1 or 2 families. Stoddarts appear unconnected to stotharts. Separate families at least from above 2 x James; 1x Robert; 1 x Thomas = 32 people. Robert I believe is at Middliebie in 51 - His son David at middliebie (41) in 1881.

In 1881 Census Bloughwell is described as a small farmhouse - Some Stotharts living there - names suggest son/dau & family of James & Bridget above. Can check - Thomas b 1839 (farmer of 20 acres) & Helen b 1837.
