The 2005
UK eLearning Regions and Cities Conference (Oxford 21 and
22 June 2005) will be based at the Saïd

of Oxford, in Oxford.
The
conference

Coffee
will be served on arrival, mid morning and mid afternoon,
with a buffet lunch available each day.
The

from the mid morning coffee break on the first day through
to the afternoon coffee break on the second day.
There
will be a conference dinner on the

Getting
There
The
conference venue is about 100 yards from Oxford train station
(direct trains to London Paddington and to Birmingham and
Manchester), and about 300 yards from Oxford coach station
(direct services to London and to London Heathrow and London
Gatwick Airports), and from the centre of the city of Oxford.
- See
here
for a map of the location, directions, and further details
about access and parking;
- See
here
for a website to search for an appropriate train;
- See
here
or here
for a website to search for coach services from London Victoria
(very frequent, excellent value for money);
- See
here for information
about coach services from Heathrow airport and Gatwick airport;
- See
here for coach services from London Stansted airport,
running every two hours.
Note that train
services from Stansted may be more convenient in terms
of timing
- See
here for information
about coach services from Luton airport, changing at
Hemel Hempstead, Heathrow Airport or Milton Keynes;
- A number
of companies, including Oxicars
and CCB cars, offer
pre-bookable airport transfers.
- Please
note that parking in the centre of Oxford is not easy, and
we do recommend travelling by public transport, or using
the good Park
and Ride system from the outskirts of Oxford, if at
all possible.

Staying
There
There
is a range of different accommodation options, from classic
hotels to modern hotels, bed and breakfast to youth hostels,
and university college accommodation. Probably the most
complete listing of local accommodation is on the Daily
Information website (a local information website about
Oxford - see here
for more
details about Oxford itself). Alternatively, there is
another site giving information
about Oxford and about accommodation in Oxford, operated
by the City Council here.
We
have arranged a special delegate rate of £94 per night,
including breakfast, at the Royal
Oxford Hotel, which is immediately opposite the Saïd
Business School. This is very convenient, and includes a small
discount on the rack rate, but it's not cheap! There are many
other hotels - many at much cheaper rates per night! - elsewhere
in Oxford, so do have a look around!
The
other closest hotel is the EuroBar
Hotel, in George Street. This is clean but pretty basic,
with some ensuite rooms and some rooms with a sink only, with
a shared bathroom just down the corridor. Single rooms are
between £45 and £65 per night, doubles between
£56 and £80 per night.
However,
there are many other hotels and guest houses in and around
Oxford. If you are looking for a hotel, and want to judge
how far it is from the conference venue, remember that the
Saïd Business School is right next to the train station,
in the centre of Oxford (bottom right of square C5, just above
the word 'Park' in the name of the 'Park End Street' on the
Daily
Information area map of Oxford). There are good links
into the centre of Oxford down the main arteries (for example,
there are good bus services straight down the Woodstock Road
into the centre of town, so that it is perfectly possible
to stay at the Oxford
Hotel on the Pear Tree Roundabout, on the outskirts of
Oxford, for example.
It is equally possible to stay somewhere a little different,
such as at The
Bull at Charlbury - a sort of gourmet pub in a village
7 miles outside Oxford, with a couple of really nice guest
rooms run by a retired manager of 70s rock bands - but remember
that you will need to allow for travel time into Oxford in
the morning, so it might be best to take the train in from
Charlbury!
The Gala Dinner will be within half
a mile from the centre of Oxford, at Sommerville College,
at the bottom of the Woodstock Road (top left of square C5
on the Daily
Information area map of Oxford, just North of where the
Radcliffe Infirmary is marked).
