Sports and Activities

See here for comments from students about what they think of our courses.

We are very lucky to be using one of the largest and best equipped sites in the UK. We have full use of a large school, equipped with all the resources and space you could possibly need, from sports fields to swimming pools, from classrooms to residences.

The sports fields are particularly huge, covering some 98 acres of sports areas, with a swimming pool, 24 tennis courts, several football and rugby pitches, a sports hall, and too many other sports to list. All these facilities are contained in elegant North Oxford buildings on a huge site, so close to the centre of the city, yet apparently in the middle of the countryside.

One of the biggest advantages is that there is a special underpass between the two parts of the school, linking the teaching area to the sports fields. You never need to cross a road!

For a programme of activities on the first days, as you arrive, click here.

For a sample activity programme for a whole two week course, click here.

Language learning is what you are here for, and that comes first, of course, with classes in the morning and early part of the afternoons. However, when the classes are over, we want to make sure that you get the most out of the extensive range of facilities. It may be that you will want to have a leisurely game of tennis, or to play a full football match. On some afternoons, we will arrange swimming with a lifeguard on duty (we don’t allow swimming without a lifeguard), and we will also give you the opportunity to try a range of English sports - such as cricket!

As well as the classic sports such as those mentioned above, we also have a range of other options, including Aerobics and Boxercise classes (just for girls!), Parkour (a sort of outdoor gymnastic sport, learning how to jump over and through things with style!), Ultimate Frisbee (a bit like non-contact American Football, but with a Frisbee), Croquet (a traditional English summer game), and many other games that you might never have tried before - but which we know you will love!

We also offer a full range of other types of activities. Not everyone wants to play sports all the time, and even the most sporty people welcome a change from time to time, so we have lots of other things for you to choose from. These might include Art Classes, Silk Painting, Yoga Classes, Photography Workshops, and many other interesting options. We also arrange escorted tours and afternoons into Oxford, to go shopping or to visit some of the many museums and galleries in the city.

And we also have a range of group social activities - discos, of course, but also karaoke evenings, team quiz evenings, scavenger hunts and treasure hunts, film evenings, and many other different things for you to do.

Charity Events

We also arrange special course parties - in fact, often the students get closely involved in arranging the parties with us - even with some of them helping to raise money for charities such as Save the Children. At every stage, we want to encourage students to enjoy themselves whilst broadening their understanding of the world and how their actions affect - and can benefit - others.

There are always free activities for you to choose from, included in your course fees. We want to make sure that there are lots of exciting and stimulating things for you to do – as well as to give you opportunities to take part in some quieter activities, or just to go for a walk along the canal (yes, we have a canal running through the grounds!), or go punting along the river (see here for an explanation of punting).

We also provide various additional activities which you can select in addition to the wide range of free options in the programme. This might include some extra excursions, or some trips to the theatre (perhaps in Oxford, perhaps in Stratford-upon-Avon, perhaps in London), or many other exciting options.
