This area of our website provides information about working with Education aBc, including details on how to apply. If you are a good teacher; if you want to work hard and be paid well for it; if you want to know that your teaching has made a difference to your students, we want to hear from you.

We have divided the positions we need to fill into three broad categories – Teaching, Activity and Residential, plus Senior Staff. However, it is very likely that many Teaching staff will also be residential and will participate in some of the activities. It is equally possible for someone who is principally an Activity or Residential staff member to be involved in the teaching – especially in the afternoon option classes, for example, taking a drama class or a current affairs class. We want all staff members to be part of the team, and to work together.

This summer, we will also be appointing a Dean (or Deans) of students, who will be the lead person responsible for student welfare outside class hours, including responsibility for keeping records of any students who leave the site, and working with residential staff at the end of the evening.

When you fill in the application form, please indicate all the positions in which you are interested, and we will discuss the right balance for you when we meet.

We are paying high rates for staff, we want to recruit the best. We want you to work hard while you are with us. We believe in short, sharp burst of hard work for 2, 4 or 6 weeks, earning as much as you would elsewhere over a summer of 8 or 10 weeks, and having time for a well earned break afterwards. If you are good at what you do, keen to work with us, and not afraid to put in a bit of effort in return for being well paid, then we want to talk to you.

 

Teaching Staff Salary: normally £19.50 per hour (£409.50 per week for 21 hours); £10 per week supplement for Diploma qualified teachers

Teaching Staff Salary: normally £20 per hour (£420 per week for 21 hours);
£10/wk supplement for Diploma, £10/wk supplement for returning staff

The Teaching is what the course is all about. Parents pay for their children to attend courses with us so that they can do better in their English language classes when they get back home. We want teachers with a minimum of a TEFL Certificate (or equivalent), and ideally teachers with a TEFL Diploma (or PGCE, or equivalent). We want good teachers, who will work hard with our students, and we pay good salaries in return.
The basic teaching contract is either for 15 hours per week, or for 21 hours per week. We will be employing some teachers just for the 6 hours per week of the afternoon options, if their expertise is more subject specific rather than in TEFL.

English Language Classes run every morning Friday to Tuesday for three hours. Each class will have two teachers, and we expect the teachers to work together in planning, materials selection and in preparing end of course reports. We have an extensive library of materials, and will be looking for teachers who are comfortable in selecting the most suitable work for their particular group of students.

Afternoon Options include a broader range of subjects. Students are less rigorously divided by level (though some classes are more suitable for different levels, of course), with options ranging from the more classically language based Grammar Clinics, Examination preparation classes and Pronunciation Workshops through to Current Affairs, Drama Classes, Art, and Music. If you have a speciality in which you think we might be interested, talk to us. We would rather work with subjects which will keep you inspired than to push you into our moulds.

Activity Staff Salary: £29 per session, normally £290 per week, £10/wk supplement for returning staff

After classes are over, the focus switches to the activity and excursion programme. We offer a wide range of activities, from punting to sport, from museums and galleries to art classes and drama events, excursions to London, Bath, Brighton, Cambridge, Stratford, evening theatre trips, to frankly rather silly afternoon team games! – and there may be extra things which you would like to add. We want enthusiastic, energetic people who can animate and inspire, but who can also lead activities safely and in a controlled manner. There are five afternoon sessions each week (Friday to Tuesday), seven evening sessions each week, and two full day excursions (which count as two sessions each). There are also supplementary payments for lifeguards, first aiders, appropriate refereeing and coaching qualifications, aerobics qualifications, etc.
Student Café: Activity staff will also be involved in supervising and managing the Student Café – serving non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, working alongside the Dean of Students and supporting the activities based in this area (e.g. Karaoke, Blind Date). Residential Staff Salary: Full board & lodging plus £60 per week or £180 per week (senior residential staff in each house)

The Residential Staff are the core of the welfare support for students. Of course there will be a certain amount of making sure that students behave in the evenings, but the first priority for our Residential Staff is the welfare of the students. We provide free board and accommodation, plus a residential responsibility allowance (on top of any other salary payments). In return for this, we expect you to be in the residence every night between 22.30 and 07.00, and available in case of emergency such as a fire. At 22.30, all the residential staff will work together to check the students in for the night, and to ensure that the house is calm and ready for sleep. Normally just after 23.00 you will be free to go to sleep in your own room. We will expect you to supervise some of the evening videos (we offer an evening film from 21.00 each night in each residence, as a way of starting to calm the students down ready for bed), and generally to set a tone of welcoming calm. We will also expect you to be more generally available in the residence for at least 3 evenings per week, from 19.30, in case students need assistance or support, or just someone to talk to.
The Senior Residential Staff member will normally deal with all arrivals and departures in the house. This will involve administering all the arrivals and departures, including dealing with medical and student information forms, student ID cards, and collecting students’ passports and other valuables which they wish to leave in the course office for safe keeping. Since this will take all day on arrivals days, and will require some considerable involvement on departures, too, as well as coordinating work with other residential staff in the house and liaising with other welfare functions across the school it is not normally possible for the senior residential staff member to go on excursions, so he or she receives an extra payment for the extra responsibility.
All residential staff have one full night off per week, when they can leave the house if they wish, or come back after curfew (responsibly!), arranged between the staff members in the house to ensure the continued smooth running of the house.
You will be the backbone of the course, ensuring that the students are well behaved in the evenings, that they get a good night’s sleep so that they are ready for classes and activities the next day. And most of all, ensuring that the students feel comfortable and safe, with a good basis for them to get on and enjoy the rest of their course.

Excursions and Transfer Coordinator Salary: £350 per week

Working as part of a team with the Course Director, Activity Coordinator, Site Supervisor, Deans and particularly with the Welfare and Administration Coordinator to manage activity and excursions for the whole site, particularly in ensuring that all excursions and transfers get off smoothly, but with principal responsibility for preparing and overseeing Excursions and Transfers. Liaison with taxi and coach subcontractors, and with excursion entrances. Liaison with St Edward’s kitchen on packed lunches and arrival and departures catering arrangements. Managing and briefing staff for transfer and excursion duties. Working with Course Directors, leaders and students on special requests. Any other related work as reasonably required by the Directors. Day off: normally Thursday and Friday.

Dean of Students Salary: £29 per session, normally £300-400 per week, £10/wk supplement for returning staff

To provide a welfare supervision role to complement the Course Director role, there will be a Dean of Students on duty every evening until midnight, as well as most mornings and afternoons. The Deans will operate from the Student Café (and their duties will include operating a small tuck shop from the Student Café, as well as supervising any activities (e.g. afternoon video) which may be planned for the Student Café. There will normally be three daily sessions for the Deans: 10h to 13h, on days when there are classes, during which time the nurse will be present, and during which time the Deans will also operate the Student Bank; 15h to 18h30, on days when there are classes; and 19h00 to 22h30. On both the afternoon and evening sessions, the Deans will provide the central point of student welfare, including holding the registers for all students who wish to leave the site at any time. Students will sign out with the Dean, and should sign back in before 22.00. All students should be on site by 22.00. Students should then be in their own residences by 22.30, and ready for bed by 23.00.
On arrivals and departure days, the Deans will work together as a pair, working closely with the Excursions and Transfer Coordinator and the Welfare and Administration Coordinator, managing the Student Café (including the Student Bank) for students as the main focus for arrivals and departures.
Some coordination with residential staff may be required if students are off site on an organised trip (e.g. theatre visit). If there are any emergencies (e.g. medical, families needing to contact students, etc), the Dean will field these (referring to the Course Director if support is required). Ideally, the Dean should have a current first aid certificate (though it may be possible to arrange for training before the start of the course).
The role also includes various minor additional areas of responsibility, such as supervising (in partnership with the Activity Coordinator and the Site Supervisor) the activity programme materials and sports equipment, which are all held in the Student Café. Any other related work as reasonably required by the Directors. Day off: normally Wednesday and Thursday.

Site Supervisor Salary: £550 per week

To support the Residential Staff, there will be a Site Supervisor on duty every evening, overseeing all activities and fielding all issues arising on site between 18.00h and 08.00h on six days per week, including student welfare and satisfaction issues, maintenance issues, fire alarms and fire drills, any arrivals or departures outside normal hours, and any other evening or overnight emergencies or issues requiring (or benefiting from) prompt addressing. The Site Supervisor will start work at supper time, and will be based in or near the Activity Office. The role will overlap with the Activity programme, and the Site Supervisor will need to work closely with the Activity staff and with the Deans. The Site Supervisor will be responsible for general student welfare, and also for supervising (but not for planning or preparation) of the evening activity and social programme. Liaising with the Activity Coordinator (who will plan, prepare and organise suitable staffing for the evening activities) on the supervision of evening activities on site, and on the Site Supervisor role for the seventh day each week. Between 22.00 and midnight, the Site Supervisor will be out and about around the site, as a calming influence, gently encouraging students to keep to time, making sure that students are safely in their residences. Some coordination with residential staff may be required if students are off site on an organised trip (e.g. theatre visit). After midnight, the Site Supervisor will be able to sleep, but will be required to be present if there are any emergencies (e.g. fire alarms).
If there are any emergencies (e.g. medical, families needing to contact students, etc), the Site Supervisor will field these (referring to the Course Director if support is required). Ideally, the Site Supervisor should have a current first aid certificate (though it may be possible to arrange for training before the start of the course). Liaising with the Dean of Students on matters of student welfare, and on overseeing arrivals and departures on site, each Wednesday.
Supporting the Excursions and Transfers Coordinator for the departure of the full day excursion on one day each week (on Wednesday). Any other related work as reasonably required by the Directors. Day off: normally Thursday 08.00h to Friday 18.00h

Activity Coordinator Salary: £475 per week

The Activity Coordinator will be responsible for planning and preparing the activity programme day to day, and for supervising the afternoon programme (the Site Supervisor will supervise the evenings, though the Activity Coordinator will have done all the preparation and planning). Supervising, planning, coordinating and animating the evening and afternoon programme of sporting, cultural and social activities and excursions for residential English language students, as allocated by the course director, including appropriate preparation and planning, liaison with other staff and line management of staff with activity responsibilities, appropriate record keeping, and all other reasonable tasks associated with supporting the students according to their educational, social and welfare needs, progress and attainment. Visiting the classes each morning to promote the programme.
Part of the record keeping will include forward planning and keeping accurate staffing records for payroll purposes, as well as preparing (perhaps in liaison with teachers and other staff) written reports or other assessments on activities or individual students, as required.
Supporting the Excursions and Transfers Coordinator for the departure of the full day excursion on one day each week (on Thursday).
Managing the site orientation and Oxford orientation programme for newly arrived students on most Thursdays. Standing in for the Site Supervisor from Thursday 18.00h to Friday 08.00h. Normal working hours will be 08.40 (attendance at daily teacher meeting) to 18.30h (end of the afternoon activities), each day from Thursday to Tuesday. Any other related work as reasonably required by the Directors. Day off: normally Tuesday 18.30h to Thursday 08.40h.

Welfare and Administration Coordinator Salary: £500 per week

Overseeing student welfare issues, including responsibility for management of the accommodation plan, liaison with the Excursions and Transfer Coordinator and the Deans on arrivals and departures, liaison with the Residential Staff on all matters to do with accommodation. Responsible for production of Student ID cards. Additional course administration work, in partnership with the Course Director and the Director of Studies (e.g. additional support on database issues). Any other related work as reasonably required by the Directors. Day off: normally Tuesday.

Course Director Salary: £550 per week

Overseeing administrative functions concerned with the operation of the summer programme based at St Edward’s School, Oxford, including: supervising and fielding all issues arising on site between 08.00h and 18.00h on up to six days per week, including administrative support concerned with with academic management, activities and accommodation and other student welfare and satisfaction issues, maintenance issues, fire alarms and fire drills, and any other emergencies or issues requiring (or benefiting from) prompt addressing. The role will require fielding the main incoming phone calls, and being the first point of contact for students and staff on academic issues, directing enquiries and issues as appropriate if they cannot be dealt with immediately. Liaising with the Director of Studies on academic and academic management issues; with the Activity Coordinator and with the Site Supervisor (who will cover emergency issues overnight, and will hold the phone from 18.00h to 08.00h), and other staff as required. Liaising with the Welfare and Administration Coordinator and with the Dean of Students on matters of student welfare. Liaising with the Excursions and Transfers Coordinator and with the Welfare and Administration Coordinator, who will manage arrivals and departures and excursions on Wednesdays and Thursdays each week. Any other related work as reasonably required by the Directors. Day off: normally Wednesday

Director of Studies Salary: £550 per week

Overseeing academic functions concerned with the operation of the summer programme based at St Edward’s School, Oxford, including: supervising and fielding all academic issues arising on site between 08.00h and 18.00h on up to six days per week, including teacher deployment and management, student placement, staff meetings and staff development, representing the course on academic issues (e.g. leader meetings, parental enquiries), and any other emergencies or issues requiring (or benefiting from) prompt addressing. The role will require being the first point of contact for students and staff on all academic issues.
