Project
Management
A large part
of Education aBc’s time and energy is spent on preparing and operating
the summer courses, or other programmes in Oxford. However, the nature
of short courses is that they also provide us with both the opportunity
and the means to pursue many other projects as well. We support a number
of new educational and education-related projects, often providing resources
free of charge. For example, in 2007 we trialled the early stages of the
new International Global Citizenship award, as well as assisting with
publicity, promotion and other work.
This is a
sample of some of the other projects on which we have been working.
Short Courses
Around the World
Shanghai Summer Centre
In
2006, we started to work with a large Chinese educational company, exploring
the many different educational opportunities in China. Our first joint
venture was to establish a summer English language course in Shanghai,
and to develop appropriate course materials, and recruit and prepare suitable
English staff to go out to Shanghai to deliver the programme. This was
a high energy project, requiring very quick reactions and availability
from us, with everything moving from initial enquiry in April 2006 to
the first classes taking place in Shanghai in July 2006.
Setting up
new schools
Advising new and existing schools and
educational projects
We are currently involved in helping another
organisation to set up and launch a summer course programme in Canada,
which will complement our Oxford programme. We hope that this new summer
programme will be available from July 2009.
Setting up
new schools
We are currently exploring the possibility of
setting up a new organisation in France, to complement our summer programme
in Oxford, and to benefit from the experience we have gained elsewhere
in the world. This will involve providing intensive immersion courses
locally, to avoid students having to travel to the UK, or having to make
alternative domestic arrangements (e.g. for child care) while they attend
a course. We hope to launch our new programmes in France from January
2009.
Language School Consultancy
Advising new and existing schools
and educational projects
Of course, it would be inappropriate for
us to name schools which have sought our advice, but we are regularly
asked for advice and guidance on everything from setting up summer centres
to liaison with overseas business contacts, from student welfare arrangements
to staff management issues. This may involve colleagues setting up new
schools or taking over existing schools, or may simply involve schools
wishing to revitalize their existing arrangements, or to raise their game
in preparation for inspection or accreditation.
