Notes from Staff Meeting July 12 2005

Discussions of Correction Techniques, including:

  • Peer correction (involve all students)
  • Selective correction - don't interfere with the flow of communication, but where it affects meaning
  • Self correction
  • Echo correction
  • Finger correction (especially for word order)
  • Ask a PAIR of students to answer (shares burden, pressure)
  • Ask students in order round the class (gives them time to think)

Discussions of ways of getting students motivated first thing

  • Running Dictation
  • Shouting Dictation
  • Questions on a text at a distance (have to run up and down stairs to where the teacher is sitting)

Also, notes on stopping use of Mother Tongue (L1) in class:

  • Fines (go to the charity)
  • Order seating competitively
  • Appeal to students' better nature (other students are excluded from conversations)
