Travel, Transfers and Transportation

For the latest updates on Student Visas for short courses, please see here.

Travelling to Oxford

You can travel to Oxford anyway you like: alone, with a friend, with your family.

Oxford is quite central in England, and can be accessed from all the London airports, as well as from Birmingham airport. The best airport to choose is London Heathrow, which is less than an hour away from Oxford.

It is also possible to travel by train (for example, Eurostar from Paris or Brussels, which arrives at London St Pancras), or by ferry and car. If you would like some recommendations, please don't hesitate to contact us.

If you are travelling independently, then you should also look at the map of how to find St Edward's School, where we operate our courses.

Transfers on arrival and on departure

Included in the course fees are transfers on the designated arrival and departure days from London Heathrow Airport (or from London St Pancras for the Eurostar for designated trains) to St Edward's School, where we operate out courses (please see the Application Form for full details). You just need to let us know the details of your flight, and we will arrange to meet you and make sure that you meet up with your transfer.

On designated arrival days, transfers are arranged from London Heathrow airport. Our staff meet students and groups as they come through to the Arrivals Hall after passing through Customs.

On arrival, you must look for our staff member, who will normally be carrying a sign with the Education aBc Oxford logo and name on it.

If you want to have updated information about your flight arrival or departure times from the UK, there is a new service provided by British Airports Authority, called Flying Messenger. To use this service, send an SMS (text message) to 82222 with the following information:

  • The airport shortcode (LHR for Heathrow, LGW for Gatwick, STN for Stansted)
  • The flight number (e.g. ba123)

So your text message for flight ba123 arriving at London Heathrow would be: lhr ba123.

The Flying Messenger service costs 25p (plus any international charges) for each request, and holds information on flights 4 hours after landing and up to 12 hours ahead of the current time. For more details, please see the British Airports Authority's own website.

If you are not arriving at London Heathrow at the designated times, there are public service buses you can take from each airport.
See here for details of buses from Heathrow and Gatwick.
See here for details of buses from Stansted airport.
See here for details of buses from Luton airport.

Alternatively, we can arrange a private transfer for you - please contact us for details.

Unaccompanied Minors

UKVisas have updated us on the documents/information required by unaccompanied minors travelling to the UK as follows:

We have to be very careful with minors entering the UK as we need to look after their welfare. To help with this we need to make sure that appropriate arrangements have been made for their reception on arrival. Both Entry Clearance Officers and Immigration Officers therefore record information on who the parents are, who is responsible for the child in the UK and where they will be staying.

Of course, we have our staff at London Heathrow Airport on arrivals day, so this should not be necessary. However, just in case, the official recommendation from the UK Government is that all students under 18 years of age should have -

  • a letter from their parents or guardian giving permission to travel
  • the name of the person with whom they are staying (homestay or residence) - Education aBc Oxford, Summer at St Edward's School, Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 7NN
  • confirmation of enrolment letter from the school - this is normally your invoice/booking confirmation
  • the name of the Principal/Director of the college - Andrew Brown, Education aBc Oxford 07779 021464
  • the name of the taxi firm that is collecting them from the airport - this is normally Fone-A-Car, but if you have a problem please call us first on 07779 021464.

All this information should be on your confirmation of enrolment letter (invoice/booking confirmation), but please contact us if you have any additional concerns.

Transportation

Once you arrive in Oxford, you won't really need to worry about transportation. We arrange any transportation necessary, for example, the coaches for your excursions. We are just 15-20 minutes walk from the centre of Oxford, and we arrange walking visits into and around the city every afternoon. If you need to, there are lots of buses and taxis available, of course.

While you are with us, we expect you to be on site all the time, unless you arrange otherwise with us. This means that we know where you are, so that we can look after you. We expect all students to be on site by 22.30h each evening. Students attending the Young Adult course are allowed to leave the site unaccompanied (we recommend travelling with friends if possible), if they have permission from their parents (a form to give permission is provided in the Joining Information Pack), and if they sign out with the Dean of Students. Students from the Junior Course are not allowed to leave the site unaccompanied at any time.

Once you are registered with us as a student, we will send you a full joining pack of information, giving you some ideas of what to expect, what clothes you might like to bring, and lots and lots of other information.

You might also like to have a look at this British Council website, which gives you ideas on what to pack, and what to expect.
