| Set up in 1999, The Independent
Art School started out as The New Hull School of Art, a two week school
set up at the RED gallery in Hull as a statement against the imposition
of modularity onto the excellent Fine Art course at Hull School of
Art & Design. The Independent
Art School Conference followed in October 2000, running alongside
Hull Time Based Arts ROOT festival. Where the work-in school at
the RED gallery had been a statement against University policies
and the lack of decision-making power held by both students and
staff, the Conference began to question wider issues surrounding
art education and what it should or could be.
Models
of Practice followed in february
2001 at Dilston Grove, a Cafe Gallery venue in London. This time
the emphasis moved onto dialogue about peoples own art practice.
Regular seminars and artists crits followed,
alongside collaboratiosn with other art organisations and artist-run
projects.
In 2004 The Independent Art School expanded
on its 'events as temporary schools' premise and became a curatorial
project commissioning artists to develop projects around the notion
of the role of the 'lecturer'.
For the May '68 anniversary in 2008 the Independent
Art School has taken up a self-initiated residency in an art institution.
Following this sabbatical it will return in 2009 and re-position
itself within the wider debate about art education and the role
of the artist.

| The INDEPENDENT ART SCHOOL
The Independent Art School is
a critical project that engages in dialogue with artists who choose
to function both inside and outside of the recognised art educational
system. Through writing, curatorial projects and collaborations
the IAS seeks to understand and respond to the state of art education
today.

Art School.
The Independent Art School Journal is a site
for non-aligned debate around art and art education.
